A Short Fire documents a short performance/ritual in which the artist constructs a small contained fire of garden clearance debris. The action is intended to be cathartic and takes place in the overgrown garden of her former family home. An uncomfortable act of transformation and reclamation. This work follows on from an earlier work 'Garden Clearance' from 2017 which took place in the same location. A Short Fire is one of a new series of works where the artist has moved back to digital video from Super 8mm and 16mm in order to capture short improvised performances. These performances verge between ritual and dance, using sculptural objects and costume elements which are repeated or redefined through different works. The series explores the potential of a semi-magical figure working in everyday environments. There is a strangeness or uncanniness to the performances, in each a moment of catharsis is sought through transformation of material objects in response to specific sites. Each work combines movement and objects and sometimes voice.
